John Deere, a blacksmith, figured that a properly shaped and self-polishing steel plow would be a huge improvement over the iron plows used in the prairie in the early 1800s. He made a few for neighbors and word spread. He moved to Moline, a transportation hub on the Mississippi, and his factory grew to the point where by 1855 he had manufactured and sold more than 10,000 of them, "The Plow that Broke the Plains." He is quoted as saying, "I will never put my name on a product that does not have in it the best that is in me."
